Volcanic ash continues to be a burden for the world at large, and super-star racing drivers are no different. Prior to this weekends race Bruno Senna and Karun Chandhok could be seen grabbing some van rental and flying along the motorway to get down to the Riviera.
Mark Webber is starting to look like a bit of a giant killer as he begins to turn up the heat on this years F1 Championship. The Red Bull team are looking as bright as ever, and Webber is matching it with his precise lines and smart decision making. You’d have thought that Alonso would be up there with him at least in a fight for a podium place, but he was nowhere to be seen on race day.
All eyes were on Alonso in qualifying on the Saturday, but he took a turn for the worst and rattled his car to shreds. In an uncharacteristic misjudgement he ruled himself out of the positioning with a ruthless crash-out into the barriers. It seems a shame that drivers aren’t allowed to qualify after a single crash out: maybe they could get hold of their team mates car for a session? Surely they’ve always got standby’s laying about somewhere in a van. Hire one off a friend? A crash is a crash I suppose, and it’s not like the rules of F1 haven’t been read over once or twice.

Alonso wasn’t fortunate enough to be given the golden ticket of more drivers missing out on a qualifying time themselves, and he started Sundays race at the wrong end of the grid. All credit to the Spaniard who managed to get himself into 7th place, and only lose out to Hamilton for 6th as there was a bit of a tangle with the rules of the safety car.
Mark Webber in first, followed in by Sebastian Vettel, and Robert Kubica. This race was not shy of controversial matters and expletives. Plenty of highlights all around, here’s a summary of the sparkling favourites:
Oh F1, you suprise me time and time again.
