Volcanic ash continues to be a burden for the world at large, and super-star racing drivers are no different. Prior to this weekends race Bruno Senna and Karun Chandhok could be seen grabbing some van rental and flying along the motorway to get down to the Riviera.

Mark Webber is starting to look like a bit of a giant killer as he begins to turn up the heat on this years F1 Championship. The Red Bull team are looking as bright as ever, and Webber is matching it with his precise lines and smart decision making. You’d have thought that Alonso would be up there with him at least in a fight for a podium place, but he was nowhere to be seen on race day.

All eyes were on Alonso in qualifying on the Saturday, but he took a turn for the worst and rattled his car to shreds. In an uncharacteristic misjudgement he ruled himself out of the positioning with a ruthless crash-out into the barriers. It seems a shame that drivers aren’t allowed to qualify after a single crash out: maybe they could get hold of their team mates car for a session? Surely they’ve always got standby’s laying about somewhere in a van. Hire one off a friend? A crash is a crash I suppose, and it’s not like the rules of F1 haven’t been read over once or twice.

Alonso wasn’t fortunate enough to be given the golden ticket of more drivers missing out on a qualifying time themselves, and he started Sundays race at the wrong end of the grid. All credit to the Spaniard who managed to get himself into 7th place, and only lose out to Hamilton for 6th as there was a bit of a tangle with the rules of the safety car.

Mark Webber in first, followed in by Sebastian Vettel, and Robert Kubica. This race was not shy of controversial matters and expletives. Plenty of highlights all around, here’s a summary of the sparkling favourites:

F1 Massa “screws” Button

Hamilton brings class into it

Trulli batters Chandhok

Oh F1, you suprise me time and time again.

Where are you planning to be for this world cup then? How about the one after? And the one after that?

It seems as though Fifa has gone forward-planning crazy as they look to arrange bids for the World Cup of not only 2018, but also 2022 efforts!

It’s obvious that we’re pushing hard for 2018 as you can’t even leave a Morrisons without having a sign-up sheet rammed down your throat (I might sound like a grumpy bastard, but I’m TOTALLY onboard with the whole idea.. I’d love to see the World Cup on our home turf – I signed the sheet the minute I saw it), and with David Beckham fronting it for us we must be pushing big monies in.

Australia though, are the ones to look out for as they pour efforts into convincing Fifa they’d be the best option. They seem to be having a lot of problems with their stadium sizes, though, as they struggle to pick the standards they’re going for. They’ll need to have some chuffing big stadiums in order to get everyone in, but they’re also needing to remain compliant with the wishes of Fifa. There’s a little more detail on the story here.

With mention of all of Australias biggest places they’re lining up the big guns to get their Socceroos (yes, they actually use that as a term to describe their OWN FOOTBALL TEAM) on the front line and in the running for a front-garden victory. I’ve been out there before and happened to catch them mid-world cup. The only thing that should stop you doing the same is flights to Australia: price-wise it’s the only thing that will cost you anything more than day-to-day living in England, and you can find work out there if you’d like to come back breaking even. Best bet is to look for flights to Sydney as they are the most regular, they allow you to fly/drive to basically anywhere else in Australia (travel on the East coast especially is a doddle), and you might even be able to find a charter flight to get you there that little bit cheaper.

I know we need to keep our heads in the game for the world cup coming up now for the time being, but fingers on the pulse for the future, boys and girls. World Cup is looking to be our forté of late: imagine being there!
